- Deemed the fastest game on two feet, lacrosse has a history that spans
centuries and is the oldest sport native to the North American
continent.
- Rooted in Native American ritual and religion, the game was often played
to resolve conflicts, prepare for war, heal the sick and build strength.
|
|
3
|
- Object of both men’s and women’s lacrosse is to score more goals than
the opposing team by shooting the ball into the opponent’s netted goal
- Women's rules allow 12 players on the field, limit stick contact,
prohibit body contact and therefore, require little protective equipment
- Men's lacrosse rules allow 10 players on the field and some degree of
stick and body contact but violence is neither condoned nor allowed
|
|
4
|
- Lacrosse offers sport option for athletes of all weights, shapes and
sizes
- Lacrosse is a great preparation for other sports that require strength,
speed and agility
- Lacrosse can offer coaches and officials of other sports opportunities
in off-seasons from other sports
|
|

|
- Lacrosse, like many team sports, helps reinforce the important life
lessons that sport promotes.
- You get in on something that is getting REAL big here in Canby.
- Lacrosse, as a fast action sport, is good for you
- Simply stated, Lacrosse is fun!!!
|

- We are committed to providing our youths with positive experiences in a
team-oriented sport. The game of lacrosse is a way for youths to learn
valuable life lessons that allow them to grow into fine young adults. It
is not our mission to try to develop every youngster into a college or
professional level athlete.

|
- We are associated with Canby Kids. Among the benefits of this
association are:
- This provides access to fields
- It sets us up a tax-deductible organization for donations
- It connects us with many other local youth sports organizations –
football, baseball, wrestling, soccer, and softball – working together
to promote the well-being of Canby’s youth
|
|
8
|
- We are proudly affiliated with US Lacrosse (www.uslacrosse.org).
- This connects us with other organizations around the state, region, and
country.
- Each member gets a subscription to their magazine.
- This organization also provides the “over-arching” insurance of the
program.
- Please note that personal health insurance is required.

- Our first year consisted of one 7/8 team with 16 players which actually
included two 6th graders.
- Team was quite successful.
- Last year, we had a 5/6 boys team, a 7/8 boys team, and a HS JV team.
- Last year, we made an attempt to start a girls 5-8 team, but we did not
have quite enough players.
- Four girls ended up playing with the Wilsonville team.
|
|
11
|
- HS level
- JV team and JV2 team (probably)
- Youth Traveling Teams
- 7th/8th Grade Boys Team this spring (maybe 2)
- 5th/6th Grade Boys Team this spring (maybe 2)
- Developmental Program
- Boys and Girls in grades 1 through 4
- Start a girls team this spring – probably
- High School – possibly
- 5th–8th grade – probably
|
|
12
|
- Like last year, our HS players will officiate the youth games and be
paid for it.
- Or, they can complete paperwork so that the activity goes toward the
new Community Service graduation requirement.
- HS Players will also help out with the youth developmental program.
|
|
13
|
- We need help.
- Coaches – at ALL levels
- Team Managers
- These folks would work with the coach of the team to ensure that the
field is properly lined and mowed, that items needed for the game are
present and ready, and much more.
- Working at the game – clock, book, concessions (?).
- There are also occasional issues of supervision that we need help with
– like on the bus…
|
|
14
|
- Practice will begin during the week of March 9th.
- Games will begin around mid-April.
- Games will be done by around June 15.
- Practices will be about 3, maybe 4, times per week.
|
|
15
|
- These are competitive teams – we attempt to balance the will to win with
developing the skills of all.
- Past opponents included: Oregon City, Wilsonville, Tualatin, Tigard,
Clackamas, Glencoe, Sunset, Kings Way (Vancouver), Hood River, Grant,
Wilson, Sisters, Burns
- Schedule is fairly loose and does fluctuate during the season.
|
|
16
|
- We expect players to be committed to lacrosse in the spring.
- We don’t/won’t stop kids from other activities, but we do expect other
sports’ activities to take a lower priority.
- Playing time will not be equal – it will be earned and a factor in that
will be skills.
- Parents of players are responsible for getting the kids to the events.
- Home games will likely be at Ackerman.
|
|
17
|
- Boys and Girls lacrosse are dramatically different games.
- Girls wear protective goggles, but no helmet, shoulder pads, elbow pads,
etc.
- We hope to have enough interest for girls so that we can have our own
girls team here in Canby this year.
- If there is not enough, Wilsonville would like our girls to play with
them again.
|
|

21
|
- Season will begin around April 18.
- Season will finish around June 13.
- Practices will be held on a weeknight (Wednesday?).
- Practices and “games” will be held on Saturdays.
- Commitment is pretty loose. Kids are encouraged to play other spring
sports. We ask for a fair balance of commitment though.
|
|
22
|
- Games will be 5-on-5. No score will be kept. No goalies. Smaller than
normal field. Coaches will be on the field. No checking!
- There will not be “teams” except as assigned on “game day” for that day
only.
- Playing time will be as equally allocated as possible.
- Coaches will pay close attention to size, age, and gender of kids and
make any appropriate adjustments.
|
|
23
|
- Since the girls game is so different from the boys game, we would like
to have enough players to be able to split up the players based on
gender.
- If we can do that…
- Then girls will need to get only the goggles and the sticks.
- Boys will need a complete gear set though.
|
|
24
|
- US Lacrosse Membership - $25
- Canby Lacrosse Registration – about $65
- Includes a basketball-style reversible jersey
- Gear - $200
- But find it yourself used for potentially much less
- Total could be as low as $90!
|
|
25
|
- We do recognize that some 4th graders could be ready for the
step up to a 5/6 team.
- We are NOT against 4th graders playing up, but…
- We will take 5/6 graders first and won’t overfill a 5/6 team, and…
- We don’t want a 4th grader who is not “ready” to do it.
- If a parent believes that their youngster is ready for that step up, we
will allow the child to practice with the 5/6 team for a practice or
two.
- IF the child will fit in and there is space, then we will allow this.
- This, though, will be a highly exceptional circumstance.
- The decision will be made by members of the board in consultation with
the coaches.
|
|
26
|
- We are not yet “ready” to accept registrations.
- We are pursuing an online system.
- We will “announce” via email when the system is ready to be used.
|
|
27
|
- The starter sets include: helmet, shoulder pads, arm pads, gloves,
stick, and mouthpiece.
- Purchased separately, these items would add up to close to $400 or more.
- Via a deal we have with Laxworld, the price is approximately $220
depending on the size.
- There are some local options for gear – GI Joes, various sporting goods
stores, Bigfoot Lacrosse.
- You might also see if the older players have outgrown any gear that they
would like to sell.
- If you want to order a set of this gear, be sure to fill out that
portion of the “Interest Form”.
|
|
28
|
- Complete and turn in the Interest Form.
- Consider serving on the board.
- You’re in for a lot of great fun!!!
