Off-Season Philosophy

In order to get better, the kids need to play. During the season, we work hard to get better, but the programs that take BIG leaps are characterized by players who invest their own time and energy in getting better during the off-season.

The "play" that goes on during the off-season can be in any of a variety of formats - stick work against a wall, tossing the ball around with someone, devising and working on stick/ball tricks, attending clinics or camps, playing in a semi-organized league, and playing pickup games (rat-crosse). In fact, even watching lacrosse games and reading books about the game can help immensely.

The off-season is also a really good time to develop your weak hand - its strength, skill, coordination, and your confidence in it.

I - Curt Nelson - am a BIG believer in:

bulletMultiple sport athletes
bulletActivity in other sports does help you improve in ALL sports
bulletMaking school a priority
bulletKids being involved in other things
bulletThe need for downtime and rest

I am not a BIG believer in kids being involved in too many things at the same time. Learning to honor commitments and not overextend those commitments is a very important life skill.

With those things said, summer time is a prime time to get better. The needs of school are not present, for the most part. There is not an "in-season" sport. And, there is still time to rest and recuperate.

I have done some searching around and found the following clinics, leagues, and camps that appear to have good reputations and provide good opportunities to get better.

Clinics

Throughout the summer and into the fall, we will hold informal clinics for kids of all ages. These clinics will be held mainly on weekends (Saturday mornings or Sunday afternoons). There may be a nominal charge to participate.

These clinics are a really good way to find if your child might even like this incredibly exciting and fun game. It's also a really good way to keep your skills sharp, and sharpen them even more.

If you need gear, check out our Gear Liquidation page or send an email to Curt asking about the potential of renting some gear.

Lake Oswego Boys Youth Camp: This is the camp that Dakota, Josh, Joe, and Steve went to last summer. It is for kids will be in grades 5 through 9. Lake Oswego Girls Youth Camp: This is the "partner" camp to the one above. This camp runs on the same days (July 16-19) but runs from 12 Noon to 3 PM instead. Cost is $140.  For information, you can visit their website - www.lolacrossecamp.com.

University of Oregon/Lorne Smith Camp: This is an overnight camp intended for boys ages 12 through 18. Attendees must have a year of experience already.
