Scottish Heritage Textile Tour

“Scottish Textile Heritage:
From Croft to Mill, From Craft to Art”

I personally researched this textile heritage study tour in the summer of 2003. Its purpose was to view historic and contemporary quilts in northern England and Scotland. It’s a tour I believe in and would like to see take place as I feel there is sufficient interest in the study. I would like to locate another provider who would be committed to marketing it with an appropriate wide audience.

Focus will be on the textile industry in Scotland in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as it evolved from home to factory production. Much of the early American textile industry has roots in Scotland.

From the islands to the highlands, the border areas to the cities, this heritage is preserved and cherished. Several of the popular cultural traditions connect to the rich history of textile production, including tweeds, paisley shawls, and turkey red cotton prints. The tour would begin in Birmingham, England, after the British Isles' major quilt festival, and I plan to include visits to textile mills and major museum collections.
